In this collection of recent works, Dennis Lin seeks to preserve remnants of a past that feels increasingly fragile. The body of work on view, all segments of developing series, are anchored in two three primary materials: paper salvaged from his grandfather’s paper factory in Taiwan; and incense sticks collected from Taiwanese temples; and charcoal from a house fire. Using these materials, Lin embarks in large-scale sculpture, topographical landscapes made of paper, and hanging mobiles. Lin’s work stands as a testament to the urgency of preserving a culture facing threats of obsolescence and geopolitical pressures.
This body of work is equally concerned with the meticulous techniques of conservation and the emotional weight of hoarding – gathering, saving, and safeguarding what might otherwise be lost. Through reimagining these narratives, Lin ensures that the unique threads of his identity persevere against external forces threatening their erasure.
