4,500 joss sticks, bronze
8’h x 4’w x 12”d
This 4x8-foot relief sculpture is composed of over 4,500 incense sticks, each meticulously collected from temples across Taiwan, symbolizing the prayers and hopes of individual Taiwanese people. Laminated against a bronze panel, every stick is set at a 45-degree angle, forming a textured, shimmering field of devotion and memory. One stick is ceremonially lit each day, transforming the piece into a slow-burning archive of collective spiritual longing—an act of remembrance, resistance, and quiet persistence.
